Why AI Will Have a Bigger Impact on Media Than Social Media and the Internet Combined

Five questions about the future of media with David Gonzalez Torres - founder and editor of "Reddeperiodistas" - a digital newspaper publishing news about happenings in the media sector, Google Discover & artificial intelligence. Amongst other boards he also spoke at the Latin-American Conference of the International News and Media Association.

What are the most interesting AI use cases you have recently experienced in your field of work and why?

"At ReddePeriodistas.com, we have been training discoverGPT Pro, a B2B AI assistant for over a year to help audience managers in the media function as co-pilots to optimize content for Google Discover, which allows validating strategies, tactics, and boosting traffic on Discover as a complement to the media's editorial area - that is what I find most interesting at the moment.

What changes, influenced by artificial intelligence, can you identify in your field of work?

Essentially, it is a technology that allows analyzing large amounts of data, accelerating the learning of complex tasks, and automating routines. It should never replace the human labor of writing, verifying, and focusing news.

How big do you think the impact of artificial intelligence will be in your field of work and what are the characteristics?

The arrival of AI in the News industry will have a greater impact than the internet had in the '90s and social media in the 2010s. It will be greater due to the disruption it entails. On the other hand, AI, contrary to popular belief, will increase the value of content and news produced by humans.

What development would you wish for in your industry? How could technological innovation/artificial intelligence contribute?

Accelerate the processes of unnecessary routines, automations, and free journalists from mechanical work, allowing them to focus on producing high-quality news.

What eventual risks and/or threats do you see that come with technological development?

Basically, misinformation. It is the main challenge for the media with the arrival of this technology. Also, copyright conflicts. It cannot be that this technology is trained with the content of the media and journalists without compensation."
